February and March mark the season of saddling up at Hobcaw Barony.
Beginning February 15, and extending during two select Saturdays in March, riders are invited to bring their horses and explore much of the 16,000 acres comprising the grounds of the former plantation turned privately owned research reserve.
According to Sara Beth Freytag, Coordinator of Children & Youth Education for Hobcaw, plenty of regulars show up for the trail rides, along with those who have not experienced them before, all enthusiastic about exploring the designated areas on horseback.
“We give people a map and they go from there,” she explains. The self-guided tours go by more than 20 historic structures on the grounds, giving riders a look at “lots of different ecosystems.”
And for those who may find themselves navigationally challenged while riding the trails?
“There are arrows on trees,” she adds.
Check-in time runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and all horses, trailers, and their owners must depart by 5 p.m. Reservations are required. Online waivers will be sent via email once the reservation is complete. Trail riding at Hobcaw also takes place on March 8th and 22nd. Tours are $35 each.
