Volunteer musicians come together to play at community events
The Pawleys Island Concert Band, a community-supported, 501(c)3 organization composed of dedicated and talented volunteers, has been providing music styled after the old 19th and early 20th century town bands, since 2004. That musical movement spawned the works of Sousa, Gilmore, Conway and Prior, among others, and it’s that genre that’s adopted by the PICB.
The band boasts a roster of nearly 62 members. Sub groups within the umbrella nonprofit include a jazz band, brass choir, clarinet choir, woodwind quintet, Dixieland band, and sax ensemble. These smaller factions go out into the community (from Georgetown to The Market Common) frequently, says band member, principal conductor and retired Army musician Carson Turner.
“Our central mission is to provide a place for local musicians to play their art,” he explains. We go out to civic and community events, playing for groups like the Kiwanis, Lions, and we’ll play for governments if they want. We also visit nursing homes, churches, libraries, and veteran groups, sending a small group out to provide comfort and joy.”
The majority of PICB membership comes together and hits rehearsals for the organization’s two formal events, recently performing a spring concert in May at Pawleys Island Community Church. The other formal affair is at Christmas.
A Fourth of July event by the concert band is planned for Precious Blood Catholic Church in Pawleys Island.
Turner, a flute player, says the band accepts musicians of all ages.
