Held September 27-29 at Huntington Beach State Park, this annual event features a juried art show, live music, crafts, and food.
The prestigious Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival, now in its 49th year, takes place September 27-29 at Huntington Beach State Park.
Set at Atalaya Castle, the national historical landmark served as a winter residence of philanthropist Archer Huntington and his wife, sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington. She designed much of the art seen at Brookgreen Gardens. The structure’s 1930s Moorish-style architecture, in a nod to Spain’s Mediterranean coast, stands proudly against the pristine beachfront, freshwater lagoon, maritime forest, and salt marshes that comprise the 2,500 acres surrounding the park. The festival showcases the works of more than 100 artisans, and annually features a juried art show that recognizes the high-quality entries submitted by artisans from across the country.
Brenda Magers, manager of the state park, says the festival layout was redesigned a few years ago to include the area outside of Atalaya for the art vendors, live music, and food trucks. "The layout has made a huge difference in the comfort and feel of the festival!”
The paintings and other media will be displayed in the castle’s interior rooms and courtyard.
The Atalaya festival is known as one of the most highly regarded festivals in the southeast and draws upwards of more than 7,000 attendees.
Aside from the high-quality arts and crafts available for sale, there is no shortage of food—the expansive food court offers delicious local seafood and other area staples, and there will be live music from area musicians to enjoy.
