It takes an exceptional eye for art to find beauty in the mundane. Edward Rice of North Augusta, S.C., is one of the lucky few that possess this ability to find inspiration in the everyday. His detailed paintings of the ordinary invite viewers to look deeper at the architecture that surrounds them, encouraging them to engage with the art and look closer at their environments. Featuring a number of Southern Architectural delights, Rice’s exhibit “Beyond Depiction” will be on display at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum through September 4. Viewers of the exhibit will have the chance to view 25 pieces from the last 26 years of Rice’s career. Dormer, New Orleans, is a piece that represents the attention to detail and meticulous work that goes into each of his paintings. 

Rice’s work has been featured across the country, from exhibits in New York, Santa Fe, Atlanta, and numerous exhibits in South Carolina. He is the recipient of a South Carolina Arts Commission Artist Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Regional Fellowship, and the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award.
