Oil, 25.75” x 48.75”
The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum was conceived by a visionary group of local art lovers. Among them was a group of artists who formed in the late 1960s called the Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild. To honor the integral part that the Guild played in the museum’s establishment, each year their spring juried art exhibition is hosted by the museum. The exhibit features a diverse array of media, including ceramics, drawings, collage, graphics and mixed media in both two- and three-dimensions, photography, painting, textiles, sculpture and wood carving. All pieces were completed by local artists within the past two years.
Pictured above is the 2019 Best in Show winner, State of Mind No. 4, a work in oil by Loraine Dauphin. This year’s judge will be the nationally recognized Charleston-based artist Dee Beard Dean. Dean paints en plein air, creating landscapes filled with dramatic shadows and evocative light. She is known in the art world as an early pioneer in the plein air movement and is the founder of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast. The 24th year of the Annual Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild Juried Exhibition will open on April 29 and run through May 27. Visit myrtlebeachartmuseum.org for details on a virtual awards reception.
