Enjoy a week of Southeastern artists’ exhibits in Lake City
Each spring, Lake City, South Carolina, gears up for a week of art competition and celebration in the heart of their small Southern town. ArtFields, which began in 2013 with the goal of honoring the artists of the Southeast, offers over $100,000 in cash prizes to artists. Up to 400 works will be on display in various locations around Lake City. This includes not only professional art spaces, like the Jones-Carter Gallery and TRAX Visual Art Center, but many locally-owned spots, like warehouses, restaurants, boutiques and other shops. Displays will also be housed at the history museum, library and the Ronald E. McNair Life History Center.
The works of the accepted artists will take over these Lake City locales. A panel of art professionals will judge the competition, with awards to include the $50,000 Grand Prize and $25,000 Second Place award. There will also be two winners of a People’s Choice Award, determined by the votes of people visiting ArtFields.
Many local artists have been accepted to and competed in ArtFields in the past, with some even taking home awards. Charles Clary of Conway won the 2019 People’s Choice Award for his Memento Morididdle, created from hand-cut paper and found frames. Clary also took the top honors at the 2016 competition for his Be Kind Rewind display, made with found VHS boxes and hand-cut paper.
ArtFields will kick off on April 23 and run through May 1. Visit the website for more details, including locations, accepted artists and special events. Head to this agricultural community, just about an hour from Myrtle Beach, and see it become a living art gallery as you recognize, celebrate and share the amazing artistic talent of the Southeast. - Julie Flanagan
