New eatery serves Carolina meets California with a side of Middle America

A neighborhood hotspot has arrived in Carolina Forest. In a restaurant world where the word “eclectic” is now common, Famous Toastery has taken it to a new level. Open for breakfast and lunch daily, they blend classic offerings with unique, creative and diverse specialty dishes. Where else would you find Cream of Kale with Bacon topped with an egg of choice and Garlic Parmesan Dipping Toast ($10.99)?

The owner/host greeting you at the door is instantly recognizable as Tim McGinnis, who was the long-running anchorman for WPDE. His dream of opening a fresh, healthy, scratch-made restaurant was made a reality after visiting a Famous Toastery in another city. Everything is made fresh in-house and even the lobsters are flown in live from Maine. The interior is spacious, casual and modern with an abundance of helpful serving staff working in a team concept. A first look at the menu makes it hard to decide and by the time that you get to the daily specials you will want to try one of each.

While you’re ruminating over your main selection, a starter that is guaranteed to please is the Rumosa ($6.50). It is a perfectly blended combination of mango rum, fresh-squeezed orange juice and champagne. A regular item on the weekend specials list is the Chili Lobster ($17.99). Fresh Maine lobster is sautéed with smoked sausage in a mild chili sauce and is served over Cauliflower Cheddar Mash and is nothing short of magnificent. The flavor of the fresh lobster dominates and is complemented by the assembly of additional tastes.

A creative twist on an old favorite is the Left Coast BLT ($10.99). Bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, brie and pesto mayo on toasted whole wheat combine to create a sandwich that will make it hard to go back to the basic. It comes with a pesto pasta salad, but the fresh cucumber salad would have made a good substitution.

The breakfast selections also offer fresh, time-honored classics as well as interesting and creative options. Famous Toastery is open daily for dining, carry out or catering.
