Sandy Island is remembered and honored in this new book

Those who are familiar with Sandy Island know that it is a place filled with history, with stories and with something very special. Sandy Island...forever: A Collaboration of Essays & Images, a new release from CLASS Publishing, pays homage to the island through photography, essays and artwork.

Start out with the island's history from the days of plantations when rice was king, followed by the early 1930s that saw the arrival of the Huntingtons to the area and the founding of Brookgreen Gardens.

Meet the Sandy Islanders themselves, a people of the land in a special tight-knit community, one that is only accessible by boat. Follow the hard-fought battle to save Sandy Island from development, including the tough road and the many players who worked to make sure this beautiful land was preserved. Each piece is accompanied with a stunning painting by Maura Kenny.

The book closes with a natural history tour of Sandy Island, highlighting the many species of birds and other wildlife that call the island home, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Enjoy photographs of not only animals, but the versatile plant life of the island and the stunning scenery along the waters and in the forests of long leaf pines.

Filled with amazing history and beautiful imagery, this is one to add to your collection.
