Johnny D’s Waffles and Bakery delivers happiness for breakfast and lunch

Johnny D’s Waffles and Bakery is one of those places that just makes you want to clap your hands and hum “Happy.”

From the homey ambiance to the scratch-made, ginormous breakfast-thru-lunch menu, it’s a little slice of down-home goodness.

All the standards (eggs, omelets, cereals, biscuits and gravy) are there, but Johnny D’s also throws in confectionery wonders like a strawberry sprinkles pancake special, “Cinnaroll” and Red Velvet Waffles drizzled with cream cheese icing and dusted with powdered cinnamon sugar. And I’m kind of obsessed with the thought of French toast from homemade challah, dipped in vanilla bean custard before hitting the grill.

Sugar rushes aside, serious appetites will want to eat up one of Johnny D’s “He-Mans” like the Thrilling Three: three eggs, three strips of bacon and three buttermilk pancakes. Or there’s a list of “Skillets,” even a ranchero-style with home fries, refried beans, melted cheeses, salsa and two eggs up. Not to mention a bacon-stuffed waffle!

But if you’re like me, you’ll head right to the Benedicts. The California Benedict comes with a thick slice of avocado, the Irish version features corned beef hash and the Crab Cake Benedict is one of the many recipes that were passed on from Nibils, the last popular eatery to operate out of this location.

Moving into lunchtime, you can still enjoy the Nibils She Crab Soup and seafood salad. And there are pages of burgers, wraps, salads, paninis, specialty sandwiches (including open-face and triple deckers) and hot plates.

Johnny D’s has already made quite a name for itself when it comes to the signature Grilled Prime Rib Sandwich served with mushrooms and Swiss on grilled bread, an eggplant panini squished with spinach and roasted red peppers and the Huevos Rancheros smothered in corn salsa, guacamole, cheese and enchilada sauce.

And let’s not forget about the in-house bakery offering fresh bakes of cheesecake and thickly iced cupcakes.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to take a moment to clap my hands and hum “Happy.” I think you will too!
