Women in Business - Salem Scholten, Owner and founder of Salem Designs

Salem Designs is an independently owned and operated luxury interior design firm located in Pawleys Island and serving the South Strand. When she founded the firm in 2019, Salem Scholten was determined to make the most of her college interior degree.

After studying interior design and business entrepreneurship at UNC Greensboro, Salem moved to the beach and started designing right away—first for a firm in Myrtle Beach, then for a furniture store.

“After two years of earning my stripes, I took a leap of faith in June 2019 and started Salem Designs,” says Salem, who was also featured in Grand Strand Magazine’s June-July 2022 Dream Homes section. “I worked hard and have been busy ever since. I now have two children, 1 and 2 years old, and a plan to expand my business in the coming months—stay tuned.”

Scholten’s design philosophy is simple. “I design for the client; I use their personality along with my expertise to create a reflection of my client in their home or business place. I offer luxury interior design. From custom kitchens to custom draperies and everything between, “ says Scholten, who specializes in residential renovations and new construction. “I do not design ‘on trend,’ rather I create designs based on customer needs wants and personal taste. Each of my clients’ homes look different because I have intentionally customized them. I call this customization with a twist of unexpected flare the ‘Salem Slam.’ “

Hardworking ‘doers’ inspire Salem, but the driving force behind her hard work and business is her family—Dan, Nash, Summer, and Syd Scholten.

Today, Salem is looking to the future and to expand her team and hire full-time team members and obtain a larger studio space in Pawleys Island. To relax, Salem spends time with her family on their boat, soaking up sun on the Murrells Inlet Point and enjoying ice cream with the family at Painters Homemade Ice Cream in Garden City.  She also participates in functions at her church—Belin Memorial United Methodist, Murrells Inlet.

For women striking out on their own, Salem offers this bit of wisdom: “If you can see it, you can do it, give it all or nothing, be true to yourself and don’t lose sight of your goals. Earning your success will always be more rewarding than being handed something. Keep a journal and document successes and failures. Learn from the past and keep pressing forward!”
