Krissy Mauldin is the president of Dawol Homes, Inc., a custom-home building company which was founded by her father, David Wolons, in1996. She took over the family business in 2020, when her father retired.
“The Grand Strand was starting to expand and grow to attract tourists and residents,” she says. “My father was a general contractor in Massachusetts who enjoyed vacationing along the Grand Strand.”
After lots of research and planning, their family relocated from West Boylston, Mass., to Myrtle Beach.
“Since 1996, Dawol Homes has been working with clients in Horry and Georgetown County to design and build dream custom homes,” Mauldin says. She and her husband have continued the building legacy established by her father.
“Dawol Homes has always been noted for their exceptional quality and customer service. I learned from my father the importance of quality construction, positive working relationships, great communication, and organization.”
Dawol has a design team that works closely with clients to design a home that complements the owner’s lot, meeting all requirements of their architectural review board in their community.
“And we keep clients that have a budget within their budget,” she notes.
After architectural and engineering plans are complete and a permit is granted, construction begins.
“The custom-built home will be built to the client’s specifications and plans. There will be a landscape design that will be created and approved before installation. The landscape includes irrigation to ensure a beautiful yard year ’round,” Mauldin explains. “We are a complete, turn-key builder. We start with design and finish with a gorgeous custom home.”
She and her assistant work with their clients through the entire project and take the stress and anxiety out of the mix.
“The selection process can be an enjoyable experience and our intention is to make it enjoyable … Each vendor that we use has great customer service and they are very knowledgeable and ready to assist. All of the client’s selections get emailed to my assistant and I.”
Mauldin has sage advice for women (or anyone else) in business.
“Knowledge and passion is everything when it comes to women in business. Educate yourself in the business that you are interested in! This will give you the confidence to be successful. A business plan is necessary to set goals, projections, and budgets. Anyone interested in starting a business will need to secure financing… Networking is also important. When more people know about you and your business, the more successful your business will become.
“Finally, you will need to work hard and then get back up the next day and work harder. Owning your own business is a lot of work but the results are so worth it!”
When Krissy isn’t hard at work, she can be found on her boat with her family and friends, cruising the intracoastal, or traveling. They often go to Marathon, Florida, in the Keys. In the winter, they go on a ski vacation.
“I am originally from Massachusetts and I will enjoy a good snowfall and all winter activities,” she says.
