Beth Vereen Sisson is the owner and operator of Grand Strand Builders, LLC, in Myrtle Beach.
Her grandfather and father, both born and raised in Horry County, were contractors and ran the family business. She was raised in Myrtle Beach.
“As a young girl, I worked for my dad, in the office, and on jobsites, until I went to college,” she explains.
After graduating from USC with an engineering degree, she married and returned home to work with her father again.(She also has a law degree; more on that, later). In 2008, Beth took over the family business and founded her own company, but she and her dad continued to work together until 2020, when he passed away.
Grand Strand Builders is a residential and commercial construction company that takes on new construction projects, as well as remodels and additions.
“As a company, our primary goal is to be helpful; our secondary goal is to build relationships. If we are helpful and in relationships with our clients and peers, then we’ll have all the repeat business and referrals that we need!”
As a female owner of a construction company in a male-dominated field, Beth believes she gives clients a unique perspective.
“As a woman, I have a unique ability to help my clients ‘see’ their finished product, before and during construction. I can help them make changes to their plans or design based on how they are going to ‘live’ in their space, whether that involves the placement of specific furniture, repurposing materials that have special meaning, or considering mobility or lifestyle limitations.
“In addition, my job sites are typically cleaner and quieter!” she laughs.
Beth has strong, personal advice for women starting out in business:
“A long time ago, someone told me that there were no women in construction, and that I should go and do something else. I let that advice stop me from doing what I wanted to, for about 10 years, and then I made the decision to do what I wanted, anyway.
“It’s been the best decision; no regrets here! However, I didn’t waste those 10 years; I got my law degree and practiced environmental law for six years, in Columbia, before heading back to Myrtle Beach, and the world of construction. So, I guess my second piece of advice would be that nothing is ever wasted. Not your time, or your energy. Believe that!”
