Ellie Caruso
Ellie Caruso is president and proprietor of Excel Custom Builders, and has been operating her thriving company in Longs for more than two decades. Formerly a successful real estate agent, she built a spec home in The Dye Estates in upscale Barefoot Resort, an experience, and a home, that she loved. Coming from a contractor family background, she already had knowledge about the industry.
“I got my residential builder’s license and it took off from there, and 20 years later here I am!” she says.
Excel Custom Builders ensures their clients’ needs are met, from the very beginning to the completion of the home. “I do all aspects of residential construction from new custom homes and additions to remodels. I also help clients with plan design, through all aspects of selections from paint colors to the most important details of their home,” Caruso explains. “I am there on site every day to make sure everything is done to the best of my subcontractors’ and my abilities. I help my clients not only with the build but with design details as well.”
There are often trends in homebuilding that vary from year to year, but she cautions against making impulsive decisions - sometimes the newest and suddenly popular ideas aren’t always the best when building your dream home.
“I’m not always about the latest trends, though there are some wonderful ideas out there. I always try to make sure the houses are timeless,” she adds. “I never want to see my clients incorporate a trendy decision that they will regret in the near future.”
She says she is inspired by her mother, and offers some advice to women embarking on their careers.
“My mom has passed away, but she always was there for me. She taught me about values, hard work, and to always do the very best you can. It can be a struggle, but perseverance is the key. I am in a predominantly male field and it wasn’t always easy for me.”
Caruso believes in giving back to her community, as well.
“We donate as much as possible to churches or people in need, etc. There are always construction materials or items that we take out of remodels that are still good that can be reused.
“My biggest achievement is to have constructed beautiful, quality-built homes so my clients can make memories in their homes that will last a lifetime!” she says. She advises clients: “The building process can be a little stressful, but it should be fun as well. Don’t stress the small stuff during your home build. Enjoy the process and let your contractor deal with the issues and the stress for you. That is what will make a great home building experience for you!”
