Women in Business - Camp Bow Wow

President Gerry Leighton, Camper Louis D, and General Manager Christa Brown

Camp Bow Wow in Myrtle Beach was started by Gerry and John Leighton in 2014. They were new to the area and wanted a safe, fun place for their dogs to stay when they were traveling. The Leightons had been clients of the Camp Bow Wow franchise when they had lived in New Jersey, and decided to combine their love of dogs with a desire to start their own business here on the Grand Strand. They consider that with the addition of Christa to their staff 5 years ago, they made one of their best business decisions. Christa’s professionalism, kindness and dedication to the business of caring for the client pups, their families, and our employees in the Grand Strand could not have been a better match for their business goals.

Camp Bow Wow offers doggie day care, boarding, baths and nail trims, and enrichments that can range from private snuggle time to playing catch, searching for treats in a ball pit, or playing on a splash pad.

“Our approach towards caring for the dogs entrusted to us focuses on ensuring that the dogs feel safe and loved. All the dogs we care for are treated as though they are members of our family. Everyone on staff cares deeply for the pups in their care, and their kindness shows in everything they do for our campers and their humans.”

Additionally, Camp Bow Wow regularly fosters dogs for Grand Strand Humane Society and the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.

“At any given time, we may have anywhere from one to four foster dogs staying with us for varying periods of time.”

As for women starting out in business, Gerry offers some sage advice: “Believe in yourself, surround yourself with people who share your values and goals, understand the power of teamwork, and never give up!”
