Brandie Guerrero-Perez is the owner of Banton Media, a full-service agency for marketing, media, and advertising based in Myrtle Beach.

For this special Women in Business section, she explains how she began her Banton journey, and who influenced her along the way.

“I opened my company in 2010 with under $100 and only one goal: To help small businesses with every avenue of their company’s needs to market… I had no idea at that time how quickly the company would grow! It’s our 13th year, and it’s been a fantastic journey looking back at how it started and evolved!”

Brandie’s advice to women: “Be kind to everyone on your way up! Those same people may be the ones catching you on your way down!”

She cites her grandmother, Norma Jean Bartleson, as the most influential woman in her life.

“My Grandmother, Norma Jean Bartleson was the most influential woman I have ever known. I am the first-born granddaughter after 11 grandsons and I got her middle name. I had 44 years of being Norma Jean’s Granddaughter, as she passed away at 93 this past Easter. I would not have traded her for anyone else on the planet.

“My Grandmother was very independent, a single mother working as a cafeteria worker at a hospital, which led to an opportunity for her to assist nurses, and she ended up retiring as a nurse. She was the best cook and could throw a meal together with nothing. I could never tell which butter container was actually butter as the containers were also used as her Tupperware. My Grandmother taught me who God is, how to live well beneath your means because saving money is way more critical, modesty is the best, always fill up the hummingbird feeders, always park in the farthest parking space to get exercise in, take care of your husband, and he will take care of you, how to properly clean even when your eyes cannot see dust. ‘There IS dust Brandie Jean,’ Grandma would say. My Grandmother’s material gifts were homemade, so as an adult, I can appreciate the time she would put into making all of her grandchildren’s gifts, and then she got smart and realized a $5 bill for birthdays was easier. On my 19th birthday, I did not get the $5 or a birthday card as my Grandpa Bob passed away on my birthday. At her funeral, I was gifted to be a pallbearer and assist in walking my Grandmother, Norma Jean, to her final resting place next to Grandpa Bob. Still, I proudly wore Grandpa’s Hat and Grandpa’s old raggedy Jean Jacket, as that’s what he would have been wearing to carry her home. Even in the last week of her life here, she was still using her iPhone to like and comment on all of our social media posts. She made every one of her grandchildren feel like her favorite! My Grandma Norma Jean didn’t just inspire me; she gave me a beautiful life! Norma Jean, we love you!”
