“What Freedom Meant at Hobcaw Barony”

With its history of slavery during the rice plantation era, Hobcaw Barony serves as a unique place for kids to learn about African Americans’ long struggle for freedom and equity. Bring your family along on a visit to Friendfield Village to walk the grounds where enslaved laborers and their descendants lived until the 1950s. Activities will include singing inside Friendfield Church, peeking inside a c. 1840 cabin, picking fresh produce at the Victory Garden for the day’s celebrations, and making a take-home craft. Recommended for ages 6 and up; Participants should wear close-toed shoes and dress for the weather. The tour participants travel via a 14-person passenger bus on rustic roads of sand and dirt.
