A.J. and Emma met through mutual friends during her time at Coastal Carolina University (CC=U) that A.J. knew from his hometown of Pageland, South Carolina. It wasn’t until after the pair graduated from their respective schools (the University of South Carolina for Emma and Clemson for A.J.), that the pair actually met and connected.
They shared a love of music, which translated to a show-stopping proposal at one of their favorite music stores in Charlotte. After a concert, A.J. suggested the pair take a selfie on the side of the building, as it had a beautiful mural and would make for a perfect photo opportunity. There, he got down on one knee and popped the question—while his childhood best friend hid to capture the picture-perfect moment.
The full wedding was rescheduled to a later date, but the pair still opted for a smaller ceremony on their original June 13, 2020 date. The hastily planned wedding took place in Pawleys Island at The Village House at Litchfield.
The bride wanted a Bohemian look, with a more relaxed atmosphere—especially since the ceremony was only open to immediate family members, the wedding party, and a few family friends. The ceremony took place in front of a stone fireplace, leading to an intimate vibe, with the pastor even making jokes about A.J. going in for the first kiss too early and the couple’s favorite college football team differences. The couple was even able to sneak away from the reception to have some sunset photos taken on the beach.
A year later, on July 10 2021, the couple renewed their vows with a ceremony that was closer to the original wedding plans. A welcome reception was held at Up on the Roof at Embassy Suites on the Riverfront in downtown Greenville. The ceremony and reception were held at the Southern Bleachery, a former cotton mill with an industrial look. This contrasted with the gentle, calming light that streamed through the windows, creating the perfect ambiance for the couple. The same pastor officiated this time, though Emma and A.J. opted to write their own vows. Plus, the entire bridal party could finally participate—including Emma and A.J.’s fur baby, Caddie! The colors for the wedding included deep green with pops of pale pink, lavender, and soft, sheer fabrics with rose gold accents.
The couple now happily resides in Greenville, South Carolina, where Emma works in events coordination and A.J. is an assistant project manager for Hogan Construction.
