The 22nd annual Varna International Music Academy will be performing throughout South Carolina in late June and July, with stops in Columbia, Greenville, and The Grand Strand, among others. For this particular event, the ensemble will perform Verdi’s Requiem. Conductor Gregory Buchalter of The Metropolitan Opera, along with Varna International soloists, chorus and orchestra will take on this deeply meaningful funeral mass. The work was composed in memory of the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, who was much admired by Verdi. It was first performed in1874 on the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death.
