Priscilla’s Posse

Priscilla’s Posse

A performance and exhibit unlike any other, Ron Daise, Gullah historian and creator of the television show Gullah Gullah Island, recounts the historical visit of Thomalind Martin Polite to Sierra Leone, West Africa in May 2005. Polite is a seventh generation descendant of “Priscilla,” a slave brought from Sierra Leone to South Carolina. The songs, lectures, and photographs of this exhibit explore the links between Gullah culture and Sierra Leone including language, dietary practices, crafts, rice production, and the Bunce Island Slave Castle. The program is not available February 2 and 9.
