Book: A Culinary History of Myrtle Beach
Synopsis: When longtime Myrtle Beach area restaurant and food journalist Becky Billingsley was asked by an editor at The History Press to write a book about the area's culinary history, she eagerly agreed to research the subject and produced "A Culinary History of Myrtle Beach & The Grand Strand: Fish & Grits, Oyster Roasts and Boiled Peanuts." The book's 21 chapters go well beyond those three conventional southern treats, and while it's not a cookbook, it does contain several historic recipes. Drawing on almost 20 years of prior research conducted while she wrote food history articles for several local publications, Billingsley also harvested tasty bites of local culinary information from area museums, history books and newspaper and photo archives, and scores of interviews. Ending as it began, with a list of local restaurants that still serve the old traditional recipes, the collection is a tasty read for locals who want to know more about their culinary roots and anyone who wants to experience the delicious history of old-time southern flavors.
