Beach Bound Hounds raises awareness for greyhound adoption
Kim and Robert Owens adopted three sibling greyhounds after a chance introduction to the breed. This was in 1994, and they were immediately smitten. In 1998 they began Greyhound Crossroads, which became an incorporated SC non-profit. The Greenwood-based group has continued to grow, raising awareness and adopting out dogs, many of which make their way up from Florida after retiring from a racing career.
The organization hosts events throughout Georgia and the Carolinas so owners and supporters can come together to raise awareness for greyhound adoption. Beach Bound Hounds is Greyhound Crossroad’s yearly Myrtle Beach event, where lovers of the breed can get together for a great time and a great cause. The long weekend includes dawn beach walks, a blessing of the hounds and a meet and greet at Barefoot Landing. The event also features seminars on greyhounds, vendors, adoption groups, hands-on workshops and crafts, auctions, and even a hound skinny dip! This year’s theme is “Get Along Little Doggies—A Hound Visit to the Wild West.”
If you’re looking for a tough watchdog, a greyhound may not be for you, but they fit nearly every other bill beautifully. With calm dispositions and non-aggressive manners, most are great with children, small dogs and even cats. They can also make excellent therapy dogs.
