Good bites from the sea at the Wacca Wache
Under the shade of an old live oak, skimming the fresh water of the Waccamaw, Hannah Banana’s Sunshine Cabana (doesn’t the name alone sound inviting?) is a little bar and grill with a big personality.
It’s a comfy kind of place you can share a laugh and an order of Murrells Inlet truffles (corn dogs) or crab bites outside under that fabulous tree, which bursts from the waterfront deck, or inside at the bar or one of the colorful four-tops.
The restaurant’s owner and namesake, Hannah Spiehler, along with husband Ken and son Todd, serve up a smattering of smiles and seafood-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner. Try the Wacca Wedgie, an iceberg wedge with pecans, bleu cheese, crispy bacon, a balsamic vinegar reduction and your choice of shrimp, chicken, crab cake or mahi mahi.
Starters include the hearty shrimp and corn chowder. Hot and cold sandwiches, fish tacos with homemade pico de gallo, the popular shrimp boat, and even vegetarian creations like the open-faced Tuscan portabella bake fill the menu’s lineup. Save room for the peanut butter pie—it’s sinful.
Hannah Banana’s is a drop of sunshine at Waccamaw Wache Marina, and the Spiehlers go beyond the plates and frozen drinks they serve to host a boatload of fun for the surrounding community, like boat parades, trivia nights, live music, Sunday Brunch Music and Todd’s Homemade Jam on Wednesdays.
