Brookgreen Garden’s annual celebration includes more than 5,000 hand-lit candles

As one of the largest outdoor sculpture gardens in the world, Brookgreen Gardens offers visitors a stunning look at nature, art, history and wildlife across the expanse of four former rice plantations. Boasting more than 1,200 art pieces and sheltering a staggering array of flora and fauna, Brookgreen is seeped in Southern culture. Breathtaking any time of year, the gardens take on a whole new life around the holidays. During December’s Nights of a Thousand Candles, an annual tradition in its 13th year, the gardens are decorated with more than 5,000 hand-lit candles and strand upon strand of lights. About 30 acres are open to the public during the event, with each garden section offering its own unique display.

The celebration also features live entertainment, including Dickens carolers, local choral groups and handbell choirs. Hot cider will be offered to guests while they stroll the paths. A Lowcountry-inspired feast is available to purchase and is served underneath the beautiful live oaks.

Warm up by exploring the indoor holiday exhibits. This year’s displays include Signs of the Season in Flora and Fauna, with trees, wreaths and plaques adorned beautifully with natural materials. In Signs of the Season in Art and History visitors can take in art, furnishings and Christmas trees that show what holiday celebrations were like at Brookgreen at the turn of the 20th century.

Nights of a Thousand Candles takes place on the first three weekends of December, so be sure not to miss this festive favorite.
