Two hundred and fifty years since its adoption, the Declaration of Independence still unsettles political power – not because it promises freedom, but because it insists that those who govern must justify their authority. Centered on the Declaration’s Preamble, this lunch and lecture explores why the claim that “all men are created equal” was never a description of American society, but a powerful claim about moral standing: that ordinary people have the right to judge whether power is legitimate. Dr. Richard Almeida, Co-Director of The Belle Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies, will give this presentation at Kimbel Lodge after a boxed lunch from Get Carried Away. Reservations Required.
Hobcaw Barony, 22 Hobcaw Rd. Thursday, noon-2 p.m. $35. (843) 546-4623, hobcawbarony.org to register
