Abbie Cooper, a full-time nurse practitioner, is also the proud proprietor of Little Shell Children’s Store, a reasonably priced and welcoming kids’ clothing boutique in North Myrtle Beach. She kicked off the online aspect of her business in January, and because of that successful venture, incorporated a brick-and-mortar store just a few months later.
“When my best friend of 25 years announced she was expecting, I wasn’t able to find any local children’s boutiques with reasonably priced items,” she explains. “ I started my business online in January to help provide income for our infertility journey. It was a success, so it was time to open a storefront!”
Little Shell offers smocked, embroidered, and applique designs that are affordable, Cooper notes. “Most of our items range from $12-25. We also offer custom embroidery for in-store purchases and outside items.”
A fashionista herself, she offers knowledgeable advice to customers: “I suggest investing in high-quality, timeless pieces that can be passed down through generations. Classic styles like seersucker, smocks, and embroidered items never go out of style. Purchase classic pieces that can be worn for multiple seasons! This can even be done by layering spring/summer pieces with leggings or a jean jacket!”
Philanthropically, Little Shell Children’s Store serves as a collection site for Help 4 Kids, and will also participate in Toys for Tots this holiday season.
As a nurse practitioner, Cooper admits she had little knowledge of running a retail operation, but has hit the ground running. Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she advises. “And don’t mistake your inexperience for incompetence! You can always figure it out!”
Cooper says she is inspired by her mother and her work ethic. “My Momma is my biggest inspiration! She has always been able to do anything she sets her mind to, no matter what it may be!”
The business owner emphasizes that her boutique’s continued growth in the community and online is paramount. “We will continue to offer classic children’s clothing with coastal charm!”
