Long Bay Youth Symphony Winter Concert

Long Bay Youth Symphony Winter Concert

Under the direction of Dr. Charles Jones Evans, the program is a post-Valentine’s musical exploration of the challenges and struggles of romance, from the triumph of love against a curse in Peter Ilyich Tchailovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Waltz to the tragedy of unrequited love in music for the drama L’Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles) by Georges Bizet. The plight of star-crossed lovers caught in the midst of a 14th century Italian political revolt is portrayed in the overture to the opera Rienzi by Richard Wagner. And, winner of the CCU Music Department’s Aria Competition, soprano Annabel Poinsette, sings two famous opera arias dealing with love’s frustrations: “Steal me, sweet thief” from Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief and “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. MBHS Music & Arts Center, 3302 Robert M Grissom Pkwy, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. $10. www.longbaysymphony.com
