These five wines make it easy to celebrate the new season
Florensac Picpoul de Pinet 2019 - Languedoc, France $12
“To sting the lips” is what pique-pout means, and Picpoul is a grape high in acid. Delicate aromas of acacia, grapefruit and peach lead to a balanced mouthfeel with a lingering finish, perfectly suited to any shellfish dish. It comes from a small commune in the Languedoc region of France and is harvested at night to preserve the freshness of the grapes and prevent oxidation.
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2019 - Marlborough, New Zealand $25
Cloudy Bay was named by explorer James Cook in 1770, and the vineyard founded nearby in 1985 adopted the name. Opening with white peach and grapefruit aromas, the flavor profile is concentrated with juicy stone fruits, lemongrass and tropical notes, plus a fine minerality and satisfying finish. A versatile wine, pair with mild cheeses and most seafood dishes.
Kir-Yianni Akakies Sparkling Rosé - Amyndeon, Greece $20
Made from 100% Xinomavro grapes harvested from vineyards high in northwestern Greece. Light cherry color, with aromatics of ripe strawberry and cherry. Earthy, displaying a subtle texture and dynamic fruit character. Bright acidity, shimmering bubbles, and a lingering, spritzy finish. A welcome alternative to French and other sparklers.
Arthur Metz Gewurztraminer 2017 - Alsace $20
Instead of Riesling, next time try a bottle of Gewurtz. This example offers a bouquet of cinnamon, Asian spices and lychee on the nose, followed by apple pie and peach notes for a rich palate. It is heavier than Riesling and not as sweet, but also more delicate than other whites. Gewurztraminer goes well with Asian stir-fries and poultry dishes. Most reputable wine shops carry it.
Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “Karia” Chardonnay 2018 - Napa Valley, California $28
Karia comes from the Greek word for graceful, and this wine lives up to the name. On the nose, hints of pear, white peach and honeysuckle. Well balanced, with structure and tart minerality. Flavor notes of brioche, honeycomb and baked apple, along with fresh acidity and creamy oak finish. A fine example of Napa Chardonnay to enjoy with richer foods.
