The Art Museum’s Bishop Collection of Antique Maps and Prints is made up of 30 works dating from 1606 to 1863. European countries, after discovering the New World in the 15th century, sought to document and map these new territories. Early cartographers relied heavily on Native American descriptions, hearsay and unsubstantiated reports.
