Juneteenth Freedom Day

Juneteenth Freedom Day

On June 18, 1865, two and a half years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect, enslaved Africans in Texas, the farthest remote slave state, received notice that they were free. Although slavery continued in two Union states, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Ron Daise, Vice President for Creative Education at the gardens, will discuss the significance of this holiday, its contemporary ramifications and ways the celebration continues. Brookgreen Gardens, 1931 Brookgreen Drive. Friday, 10–11 a.m. Free with garden admission. (843) 235-6000, www.brookgreen.org
