This lecture and tour will explore the difference made by the military in the lives of descendants of enslaved laborers in South Carolina. During the World Wars, the nation experienced social and racial upheavals, and African American citizens saw a chance to escape poverty and win the respect of their white neighbors by joining the armed forces. The tour will include Friendfield Village.
