“I am a local South Carolinian. My father was a dentist in Manning. My grandfathers were a veterinarian and the other a general surgeon in Manning.” Dr. Lucia Rawlinson Covington says. “I’m married with a beautiful daughter. I love living here and plan to stay and help the community however they need for as long as I can.

“I’ve continued to watch the community grow and during my third year in residency, I decided to start my own practice here. There are very few female oral surgeons in the United States and very few that open their own office out of residency.

“I hear all the time how people hate going to the dentist. Our goal is to make them feel more at home; so, they want to see their dentist and not worry about looking for help.”

Waccamaw Oral Surgery and Medical Spa was named best of Murrells Inlet (for the eighth year in a row), a Cynosure Center of Excellence and Trademark Women of Distinction Honors Edition (2019).

“Our team is the best at the beach. They listen to the patients and stay vigilant in moving their appointments forward when patients are in pain and when we have cancellations. We support their fear and concerns in the surgical suites. My assistants go as far as to even hold patients’ hands. We all try to make their experience as comfortable and painless as possible,” Dr. Covington says.

Many people forget how our dental implants can be used to support/stabilize their complete dentures. They also forget that oral surgeons are not dentists and can treat more than just teeth, such as sinus lifts, tori removal, etc.

We support many local events and groups such as: Murrells Inlet 2020, Downtown Pawleys Island Live, All 4 Paws, Special Olympics, Waccamaw High School sports, St James High School sports, Socastee High School sports, fighting Alzheimer’s disease, Georgetown County Rotary Club, Montessori School of Pawleys Island, VA hospital/veterans, Toys for Tots, Humane Society Boomer Bash (held by Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce), donated services volunteer for Dental Lifeline Network of SC since 2017, and provides services for area nursing facilities and correctional facilities.

Our motto is “always treat people the way you would want to be treated or how you would treat your own family.”

Dr. Covington’s advice for women starting their own business is: don’t be afraid to follow your dreams. Stay focused, work hard, and have faith that God will never let you fail. The road will get bumpy at times but there will always be family, friends, and colleagues you can turn to for support. Surround yourself with a supportive staff and always trust your gut.
