CrossFit workouts are taking Grand Strand gyms by storm

CrossFit, the world-wide fitness phenomenon, has hit the Grand Strand full force. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that focuses on dynamic total body movements. Participants do “WOD”s, also known as the Workout of the Day, in groups where they time themselves and count their completed reps to track individual progress and compare their performance to each other.
CrossFitters are of all ages and skill levels, from former couch potatos to Navy SEALS and professional athletes. The workouts are intense and ever-changing, so the challenge is constant. Many gyms in the area now offer CrossFit, and its popularity is growing.

Tadd Rubin, a Myrtle Beach firefighter, has been doing CrossFit for five years and became certified to instruct last year. He co-owns Crossfit Driving Formations, a brand new gym totally dedicated to CrossFit, with fellow firefighter Dwayne Harris. He feels people are drawn to CrossFit because it mirrors what we do in our day-to-day lives.

“People are realizing how vital it is to incorporate functional movements into daily activities and workouts. Most gyms are sedentary in nature and rely on machines. Now people are realizing in order to be in shape, they need to do more natural movements. And that’s what CrossFit does.”
