From grass-fed and pasture-raised meat and dairy to
organic vegetables, the Organic Farmers Market in Myrtle
Beach offers a cornucopia for Thanksgiving

This year, instead of selecting bland, store-stocked canned goods and pre-packaged meats, why not cook up a holiday farm feast?

The Organic Farmers Market at Gallery on 8th offers grass-fed and pasture-raised meat, including beef, lamb, and chicken, as well as dairy, organic vegetables, whole grains, and coffee—many of them local. The market, run by Ovis Hill Farms, based in Darlington County, procures meats and vegetables from various South Carolina farms such as Happy Cow Creamery, Lone Palmetto Farms, Wil-Moore Farms, Oaklyn Plantation, and many more.

“Sunshine and green grass,” is what Charlie Caldwell, co-owner with wife Alice of Ovis Hill Farms, says makes this farmers market shine. Caldwell says with a smile, “If you visit us once, you won’t want to shop anywhere else.” More than eight farms participate regularly in this market. When asked the names of each farm, Caldwell hesitates, then chuckles because he thinks of them as one group of people and products, not a variety of farms.

Five years after opening in Myrtle Beach, the market has grown immensely in product and clientele, requiring a larger space provided by Gallery on 8th, a beautiful wine club and art gallery. Open every Wednesday from 3-7 p.m., year-round, rain or shine, the market can help make not only your Thanksgiving meal, but every meal healthier. With a wide selection of free-range meats and seasonal vegetables from throughout South Carolina, dairy products from Wisconsin and Ohio, and fresh coffee from North Carolina, as well as baked products and wine,
