Surfers head to the water to honor Guy Daniels

Surfers and spectators alike will be hitting the beach yet again for the Guy Daniels Memorial Foundation’s 12th annual Surf-Off, scheduled for August 11–12 at 13th Avenue South in Surfside Beach.

A rising sophomore at the College of Charleston and Dean’s List student, Guy Daniels was a Surfside Beach native who collapsed while running on the beach in 1999.  The Guy Daniels Memorial Foundation was formed to preserve the memory of Daniels and his love for the sport of surfing.

The non-profit foundation strives to award five $1,000 scholarships each year to local high school seniors. Finding it important to assist local youth in achieving their educational goals, the Guy Daniels Scholarship fund has given more than $45,000 in scholarships over the past three years. The group also promotes the protection of the local environment of the Grand Strand’s oceans and beaches.

Surfers will compete in several different categories, including Menehuene (12 & under), Men’s and Women’s Longboard, and a Bodyboard contest.
