Live & Learn!

June 2010

Broaden your mind and body by signing up for these continuing education opportunities across the Grand Strand.

Glass Class

Glass blowing is one of the most traditional artistic forms, and yet it remains widely unexplored by novices. Why not work one-on-one at the glass blower’s bench with a professional and learn techniques that have been handed down for hundreds of years? You’ll blow a vessel from molten glass and create keepsakes that are as beautiful as they are unique.
Pop’s Glass Station, 2416 Main Street (new location, within the Conway Glass Gallery building). Glassblowing 101, $225 for 2½-hour class (ages 18 and older only). Classes are held Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights and are by appointment only. (843) 248-4527, www.popsglass.com

Play with Clay

Why throw a ball when you could throw some clay? Beginning classes teach pottery fundamentals, while intermediate-level potters can spend time simply furthering their craft. Learn the potter’s wheel, texturing, trimming, decorating, glazing, and firing—all from an expert artist with thirty years’ experience. A six-week course will get you started, and you can spend the rest of your life creating and perfecting your art. Kids’ classes and group enrollments are also available.
Mud Bucket Pottery, 279 Highway 57 South, Little River. $180 includes eighteen hours of instruction over six weeks, plus 25 lbs. of clay, glazing materials, and two firings. (843) 399-8702, bwww.mudbucketpottery.com

Shag On

Meet new people and learn the official state dance by taking some shag lessons this summer. Whether you want to brush up on skills learned at summer camp oh-so-long ago, or you want to start from scratch, enroll in private or group shag classes and learn to spin, belly roll, and sugarfoot your way to fun. You may find yourself entering a competition or exhibition, but, at the very least, you’ll be the hit of the next wedding reception!
Randy and Sue, various locations, North Myrtle Beach. $40-$150. (843) 424-1001, www.randyandsue.com
