Tucked away Mexican restaurant delivers delicioso

Someone once told me “a burrito’s a burrito.” Not so, papasito.

Steer your car down Third Avenue South and Highway 15, where few locals turn for a lunch spot in Myrtle Beach, and you’ll find La Poblanita in a strip mall beside a Laundromat. This is the place for a burrito that kicks burro.

La Poblanita (the brick-and-mortar building) is actually very similar to its burritos: nothing spectacular on the outside, but stuffed with sublime. Open the glass door and you’ll know what I mean. The air is thick with onions, peppers and sizzle from the grill in the short-order-cook-style open kitchen. Mexican patrons at tables, booths and stools lining the counter surrounding the open kitchen laugh and drizzle verde sauce on deep-fried gorditas.

Hand-pressed tortillas are stuffed with great care and attention in layers of grilled steak, spicy pork, tongue or chicken, followed by caresses of mozzarella cheese, fried beans, rice, pico de gallo and avocado slices. Choose rice or a fresh tossed salad as a side, plus spoonfuls of verde from tiny bowls placed on the tables, and prepare to be blown away. My pollo decision was excellente. With fresh ingredients and authentic Mexican flavors, the result is muy delicioso!

Burritos aren’t the only A-list items on La Poblanita’s bilingual menu. I also bit into a gordita, a fried corn pocket wrapped around spicy pork (or your choice of meat), onions, cilantro and white cheese. To wash it down you can opt for a pineapple agua fresca from a fountain machine.

Traveling to La Poblanita is about traveling to the south end of Myrtle Beach to be transported to a cocina south of the border. And that’s what makes this mamacita happy.
