Chill out with these fall-weather reds
Writer’s Block Grenache
Mendocino, California, $17
Grenache can be an ideal grape for cool reds. Widely grown in the Rhône region of France, as well as in Spain where it is called Garnacha—this versatile Lake County California Grenache fits the bill and the chill.
Badio a Coltibuono Cetamura Chianti
Spain, $14
Any lighter-bodied Chianti is a great choice when chilling reds. Sangiovese, the primary grape from which Chianti is made, retains its bright-red-fruit characteristics,
even when iced.
Borsao Garnacha/Tempranillo
Spain, $8.50
Try two grapes for less than the normal price of one. Tempranillo is Spain’s premier red grape and the foundation of Rioja’s famous wines.
Saintsbury “Garnet” Pinot Noir
Carneros, California, $35
Perfect for an outdoor celebration of any attendance. You don’t have to serve magnums, although the double-sized bottles are impressive. Try any of the lighter California Pinot Noirs—cool, as well.
Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages
France, $12
Beaujolais is a perfect red to chill because of its light, fruity style. Jadot is a consistently reliable producer, but don’t hesitate to try any Beaujolais (except the 10 Cru Beaujolais).
