Golf Digest gives nod to the Grand Strand’s only par 6 golf hole
In Golf Digest’s January 2011 issue, Farmstead Golf Links in Calabash was named one of the “most fun holes you can play in America.” Architecture editor Ron Whitten chose the 18th hole as one of his “home run” holes and his final pick among golf courses in the country.
Farmstead’s 18th hole is a par 6, measuring a whopping 767 yards. The hole is unique in that it covers two states—players tee off in South Carolina and finish in North Carolina. Farmstead’s 18th hole is famous for remaining the only par 6 on the Grand Strand. “There are very few holes like it anywhere and this attaches a sort of mystery to it,” says general manager Mac Hood.
Farmstead had good company on the list. While most of the holes recognized were on the western half of the country, the 15th hole at North Carolina’s Tobacco Road and the par-3 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass in Florida also made the list.
Farmstead Golf Links, a par 72 layout designed by Willard Byrd and David Johnson, opened in 2001.
