The practice of doctors making house calls is mostly a thing of the past in today’s fast-paced world. It’s hard to imagine, for most of us. The doctor actually comes to you? Well, yes, she does, if necessary, for those unable to travel. Family and community mean a lot to Dr. Eva Merhi. She’s the optometrist of family-owned Optic Gallery Family Eye Care here in Myrtle Beach.

She received her Doctorate in Optometry from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico and has been in practice since 2004. During her education, she was a member of VOSH International, a volunteer organization that provides eye care to people in need in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

She became president of the group and successfully organized and led more than 15 missions to the Dominican Republic and Vieques.

It’s her company’s mantra to be visible and helpful to the local communities; Dr. Merhi has received the Reader’s Choice Award for Best Optometrist, has received an award for participating in the “South Carolina cares for Puerto Rico Humanitarian Relief” program and provides visual screenings at preschools. The tri-lingual doctor speaks English, Spanish and Lebanese, which also helps provide assistance to a more broad, diverse range of patients.

“I’m passionate about educating patients on the importance of preventative care and staying proactive in lowering the risk of sight-threatening disease,” Dr. Merhi says. “Our goal is to provide services to those in the community that are not able to get the eye care they need.”

Optic Gallery provides primary eye care services and checkups and boasts an in-office lab for making glasses. They carry beautiful designer frames from well-known companies in their optical boutique.

Her practice places a “strong emphasis on dry-eye disease and low-vision rehabilitation, offering OptiLight treatments for dry eye disease and skin rejuvenation.”

A recent success story for which Dr. Merhi is proud centers around a patient who came to her after having seen three different specialists for severe dry eye disease and had no resolution. After obtaining a good history and spending time performing tests to help determine the “root cause”, Dr. Merhi was able to successfully customize a treatment plan for him. At his two-week follow up, he hugged her, as he felt so much better.
