Each year, the small Southern town of Lake City is transformed by ArtFields. This nine-day art competition and exhibition welcomes artists from across the Southeast, with over $145,000 in cash prizes given in awards. The event not only celebrates and honors art and artists, it has infused a new energy, growth and creativity into Lake City and its surrounding communities.

From this Moment Forward, a public installation piece on Acline Street, was painted in 2016. In addition to being part of ArtFields, it is part of the South Carolina Rural Arts Project, whose aim is to revitalize rural towns and communities throughout the state by transforming public spaces collectively with the help of institutions, organizations and individuals. The mural by Herman Keith pays homage to the quilt designs of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. As quilts warm a physical body, the mural is intended to warm the soul.

Public art is just one of the great things to experience at ArtFields. The annual competition will feature talent from our area, with this year’s accepted artists including Jennifer Cormack, Yevette L. Cummings, Alyssa Pack, Logan Woodle and Barb Streeter of Conway; James Calk of Georgetown; Alexandra Knox of Loris and Treelee MacAnn, Francine Mabie and Michael Craig Smith of Myrtle Beach. Accepted artists from just across the state line in North Carolina are Robert Anderson of Supply, Jacob Dudley of Southport and Kathleen V. Stuart of Ocean Isle Beach. There will also be special happenings like live music and community events. Come support and celebrate Southern art. Visit artfieldssc.org for more information.
