The Coastal Animal Rescue of Murrells Inlet lets
pets-to-be roam free

In a purr-fect world, cats, dogs, and all stray animals would have good homes—or at least proper shelter. Sadly, many of these felines and hounds are left to fend for themselves. But the Coastal Animal Rescue of Murrells Inlet is more than just another run-of-the-mill holding place. It is South Carolina’s only no-kill, cage-free (yep, cage-free), 100-percent volunteer shelter.

Since its founding five years ago, the shelter has saved the lives of countless cats and dogs—well, more than 1,000 cats and 70 dogs to be exact—and spayed and neutered hundreds more. The animals are free to roam inside and out, and are cared for by a dedicated volunteer staff, which also educates the public on proper pet ownership.

To encourage this, the rescue has established the Coastal Animal Veterinary Clinic, which opened in September. Selected from an experienced list of candidates, Dr. Meisen Mok, the organization’s first paid employee, will now deliver urgent and regular care for minimal fees to any pet owner. The clinic offers spaying, neutering, yearly vaccinations, emergency and general pet care at a percentage of the cost of private practices. Dr. Mok also cares for the stray animals already at the rescue.

Consider adopting a pet this holiday, or take one in as a foster pet parent. If you’ve been putting off having your own pet spayed, neutered, or vaccinated, the Coastal Animal Veterinary Clinic is just the Spot—and that’s something to bark about.
