Charity Golf Scramble

Charity Golf Scramble

This 4th annual event benefits the Palmetto Literacy Council, which provides free tutoring to children and adults in Horry County who struggle with reading, writing, and math. The friendly fundraiser takes place at Burning Ridge Golf Club in Conway, beginning with a light breakfast at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8:30. In addition to free breakfast and lunch, there will be raffle prizes, a 50-50 drawing, and games along the route. Cash prizes will be awarded for the foursomes who come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, ($400, $200, and $100, respectively), and awards for closest to the pin, and longest drive, according to Dodi Hodges, executive director/founder of the Literacy Council. “We raised over $6,400 last year,”  she notes. “The money is used to purchase materials for our tutors to use with their students. Our binders cost about $200-$250 each. We recycle them by replacing the consumable materials and then sometimes the binder.” In addition to hiring more staff to help with the program's administration, computers, and equipment, a litany of other expenses are needed for the expansion of the Council’s programs. “We have over 100 volunteers helping and over 60 students being tutored as of today. We provided free tutoring for over 100 students last year,” she states. Burning Ridge Golf Club, 500 Burning Ridge Rd, Conway. Saturday, 7:30 a.m. $100/person.
