Conway Hosts Many Events From October 1-31
Conway, the self-proclaimed “City of Halloween” (and understandably so) is set once again to wow both Grand Strand residents and literally thousands of out-of-town visitors to Downtown.
From October 1-31, there are numerous events… too many to mention in this space. Ghost walks, Witches, Wizards & Wine, (sells out early!) and, hilariously, Coffin Races, just to name a few.
“October has become the new ‘holiday season’ for our independent businesses in Downtown Conway,” explains Hillary Howard, executive director for Conway Downtown Alive.
“The heart of Halloween, SC is a Historic Downtown that reinvents itself every October to thrill, charm and maybe even scare you just a little bit!”
Her organization hosts many of the Halloween events, but the Conway Chamber of Commerce is no slouch, either. They host the very popular Coffin Races!
“The first-ever Coffin Races exceeded expectations last year, team registration sold out before the event and thousands of spectators lined Laurel Street to watch homemade, human-powered coffins race through downtown,” notes Morgan McDonnell, event coordinator for the Chamber. “The event combined competitive racing with live music, food trucks, Halloween vendors, kids' activities, performers, and costume contests, creating an all-day festival that kept visitors in downtown Conway for hours. Building on the incredible enthusiasm from the inaugural race, the second annual Graveyard Grand Prix (October 17) is expected to attract even larger crowds, generating increased foot traffic and economic activity for downtown restaurants, retailers, hotels, and local businesses while further establishing Conway as South Carolina's premier Halloween destination.”
According to McDonnell, the city's Halloween initiative has grown from hanging a few hundred pumpkin buckets in 2019 to a month-long destination featuring:
More than 200 Halloween-themed events
Roughly 5,000 pumpkin buckets
Immersive attractions like the Tunnel of Bones, Witch's Garden, Skeleton Disco, ghost tours, and themed experiences
And, in conclusion, Conway Downtown Alive’s Howard notes: “It’s a feeling of childlike wonder that so often, as grown-ups, we forget to enjoy. Boo Y'all!"
