Use these tips to help make your big day a bit more eco-friendly

GOING GREEN: Opting for potted plants over cut flower centerpieces (plus using them as favors!) and choosing eco-friendly paper for your invitations, programs and thank yous are two ways to lower your wedding's carbon footprint.

It doesn’t matter if you are new to the environmentally conscious scene, a weekend recycler or a certified “greenie,” a few thoughtful adjustments to your wedding plans will go a long way in reducing the carbon footprint of your special day. It also makes a statement to your guests that you not only care deeply about them, but about the planet as well. With more than 2 million weddings performed in the United States each year, adopting even one small idea could make a significant difference. If every wedding this year just used cloth napkins instead of paper, it would save the destruction of over 1,000 acres of forest and trees. Here are a few simple tips to help you plan:

• When selecting invitations, programs and thank you notes, ask if the vendor offers recycled paper. If you really want to make an impression, there are companies that will custom make plantable paper products with wildflower seeds embedded in the recycled paper.
• Rent real glassware, plates, silverware and cloth napkins. Whenever possible, try to avoid single use, disposable items. Many venues are now offering biodegradable or recycled tableware in place of plastic.
• Ask your florist to use local flowers and/or organic. This not only helps the local economy, but reduces emissions for transporting.
• Use potted plants instead of cut flowers for centerpieces. Encourage your guests to take them home and plant them in remembrance of your special day.
• If your gift registry list is short, recommend that guests make a contribution to a local environmental group such as the Waccamaw Riverkeepers.

We all enjoy and benefit from a clean, healthy environment, especially along the shoreline of the Grand Strand. Everyone can contribute in their own small way and every gesture contributes to the greater good. Being eco-friendly can be inexpensive, fun and rewarding while making your wedding just a little more special.
