American Heroes

Saturday, April 27, 2024 - 4:00pm to Sunday, April 28, 2024 - 4:00pm

The Carolina Master Chorale (CMC) will wrap-up its 41st season of performing on the Grand Strand with a concert paying tribute to eight local “heroes” from different walks of life “whose passions and efforts have made our corner of the world a better place,” according to Music Director Tim Koch. The eight honorees will have their stories told in brief, and will be celebrated by CMC with a personalized choral performance selected specifically for them, touting their individual accomplishments. According to Rebecca Donevant, Executive Director, the “Heroes” motif  “is the brainchild of Dr. Koch, who wanted to feature and honor local community ‘heroes’ and give the CMC and our audience a way to say thank you!”  She explains, “Unless he speaks with them ahead of time, the music will be a surprise for them at the concert.” The CMC is a 501(C)3 Nonprofit Arts Organization. Trinity United Methodist Church, 706 14th Ave. S., North Myrtle Beach, Saturday, 4 p.m.; First Presbyterian Church, 3810 Robert M. Grissom Pkwy., Myrtle Beach, Sunday, 4 p.m. $25. The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King.

Wednesday, May 1, 2024 - 1:00pm

Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War, emancipation and hurricanes. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 1st, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024.
